Our Feminist Society

The SSUNI Feminist Society is a collection of students passionate about gender equality. Founded in April 2022 by then Community Relations Officer Ellen Taylor, the Feminist Society is comprised of students from all over Northern Ireland who come together to work on various projects.

In the Feminist Society, we strive to create a more equal and inclusive environment for learning based on the issues highlighted by our members. We work alongside schools and political leaders to create a better education system, allowing our members to have their voices heard and resolve the issues that impact them. We also support the work of the NISE, ensuring they prioritise gender equality.

The society’s past work includes our report on Sexism and Sexual Harassment in Schools, launched in Stormont in 2023, and representing students through consultations on issues we feel passionate about, such as RSE in schools. Recently, our members have attended SSUNI-led events, such as the LLW ‘Let Us Learn’ Report launch, in addition to events with other organisations, such as giving a presentation at the NASUWT Equalities Conference.

“I was introduced to the Feminist Society through becoming a SSUNI Delegate for my school. I was incredibly excited to connect with other young people who shared the same enthusiasm for equality as I did! Since becoming a Feminist Society member, I have had amazing opportunities that have boosted my self-confidence and enhanced my ability to make a real change. As Feminist Society Chair, I’m proud of our impact so far and feel confident about the positive change we can make as students.”
