SSUNI Attends Workshop with Catalyst Schools NI

Yesterday, Tuesday 5th March, SSUNI’s International Officer and author of our ‘Let us Learn’ Report into LLW was pleased to attend a workshop organised in collaboration with Catalyst Schools NI, focused on organising the next steps for LLW reform following the publication of our report into LLW.

The workshop was a great opportunity to get teacher input into issues surrounding LLW and ‘teacher-proof’ our recommendations ahead of our meeting with Minister Paul Givan later this month, so they are workable and can be implemented into the curriculum. The recommendations (summarised) are:

  1. Listen to the views of young people at all times.

  2. Use the ideas of parents and pupils.

  3. Give teachers realistic training and resources, so they don’t have additional burdens.

  4. Review, Consult, Update - curriculum needs to change as society does.

  5. Be creative and bold to inspire young people.

Lauren highlighted LLW’s potential as a subject and its potential to cover a broad range of topics, from political education to relationship and sexuality education. All of these were identified as areas of concern within the ‘Let Us Learn’ Report and SSUNI believe these areas are vital in building an education system that fits the challenges of the modern world.

An additional key point raised was the potential of LLW to deliver skills-based education. The workshop was also attended by business leaders, who highlighted these as of increasing value in the world of work - yet students are not receiving an education that utilises and develops them.

You can watch videos produced at the event, highlighting some of our work around LLW, here.
